“NOT the ‘White Man’s Bitch’” Lawsuit Dismissed
An independent Wisconsin state Assembly candidate wanted to use the phrase, “NOT the ‘whiteman’s bitch’” on the November ballot following her name. The candidate, Ieshuh Griffin (that is a capital “i”) was told she could not use the phrase because it was racially charged and derogatory.
Ms. Griffin then filed a lawsuit charging the state Government Accountability Board violated her free speech rights to describe herself. Unfortunately for Ms. Griffin, she filed the suit as a habeas corpus action, which basically states the person who filed it has been unjustly contained, and so the case was tossed out. Ms. Griffin is not now, nor at any point in this battle been in custody over the actions of her campaign slogan.
U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa, who dismissed the lawsuit said that Ms. Griffin was within her rights to file a civil rights lawsuit, if she desired.
