Consumer Interest Group Sues Coca-Cola Over Misleading “Vitaminwater”
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, or CSPI, is a nonprofit consumer advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that has a main focus of food safety and product labeling. This group has filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola in 2009 stating that the name “Vitaminwater” for such a sugary drink is misleading.
In fact, according to a recent Time article, CSPI suggests that the amount of sugar in the water outweighs any potential benefit from vitamins being added. Chief litigator for CSPI Stephen Gardner states, “They added vitamins to crap, and it is still crap.”
Gardner advocates the bottle should be more clearly labeled because the name Vitaminwater implies it is a healthy drink, which it is not, based on the amount of sugar in the drink.
To date, Coca-Cola has stated the lawsuit is without merit, and the drink clearly displays the calorie content and ingredients on the label.
