City Pays Over $7 Million to Victims of Shooting Incident
In a settlement that ranks among the biggest in recent years involving New York City Police, the city has agreed to pay more than $7 million to surviving victims of a controversial shooting that took place in 2006.
Sean Bell was unarmed and in his car on the morning of his wedding day when police officers opened fire, killing Bell and wounding two of his friends, also in the car. The event triggered a federal lawsuit, which lead to the city changing some policing procedures. Among the new rules, officers involved in any shooting in which someone is injured will be tested for alcohol, and there will be improved firearms training for all officers.
As a part of the settlement, Mr. Bell’s children will receive $3.25 million and his two friends that were injured in the shooting will also receive funds. Joseph Guzman will receive $3 million, and Trent Benefield, $900,000.
